To paraphrase him, traveling abroad will be more rewarding if you are dying to do it. There is a certain time in the process when you’ll just need to jump into it, but earning the money, getting the paperwork squared away and all of the preparation needed requires a long term commitment to the adventure before you are even out the door.
The first step should be to take a look at your motivations for travel and think about what you’d like to get out of it. Looking to experience new cultures? Want to live life on the edge? There are many different motivations, for us it was the desire to shake up our lifestyle that we’d been living for the past 8 years in Japan and try and do some things that wouldn’t be possible once we had children.
